I use the WoW addon Gatherer - miners might find it useful as well. Whenever you find a harvestable resource (herb, mineral deposit, chest etc Gatherer "remembers" where you have found it and adds an icon to your minimap.

From then on, whenever the item comes into range to your present location, it will pop up on you minimap. You can tell from the icon how long ago it was that you last harversted there, plus the percentage chance of how much of that item you are likely to get when you harvest again. It's really useful when you need to go back to an area and harvest stuff and don't want to waste time hunting for resources.

Couple of different schools of thought. It might make sense to pick the herbs and make the pots as you travel around the zones but for me I always waited until I was 10 levels above the mobs in the areas and then went back and grinded the herbs safe knowing the mobs wouldn't hassle me - also its nice to have a fast mount or flying birdy to race round and grab the herbs.

Goes without saying but you gotta grab the gatherer addon, it shows the locations of the herbs.

Noticed that I had to be careful on my fast flying beasty as the mini map doesnt update fast enough and you can easily miss a herb while the screen decides to refresh so always fly directly over the herb and fly as low as possible and you can avoid missing herbs by lag.

Some nice changes in LK some essences now drop with the herbs and these can make some nice cash so herbalism can top your bank up and keep you afloat.

Browse the AH and find out what herbs make the most money and then go farm.

I'm not sure anything I've said is ground breaking but they are simple professions, I make my own mana/spirit & Spellpower pots - with regards to making money you will not make a lot with these professions but for raiding its great to have another herbalist to grind our pots - Welcome aboard!!

Regards

Carme

I'll chip in my two pennyworth, as I'm maxed out in both.

At low level I didn't bother with Alchemy, I had Mining and Herbalism and basically sold everything I gathered. I then bought the mats to level my alchemy at 70, this took about 2 days of playing once I'd ditched mining. I had banked a number of herbs along the way to make this easier.

I found that although some herbs might not sell first time ores always did and as you are leveling the appropriate herbs and ores tend to be in the areas you are in and occasionally ores will drop gems which are another nice earner

Also herbs have a use beyond alchemy as Inscriptors use them now, so you can move a few quid there too

I did make a lot of money and had no trouble buying my mounts and any gear I came across in the AH.

As Carme points out Gatherer is essential and for ease of selling I also use Auctioneer.

Here's a fun fact, trivia fans. Lifegiving Seed will regen your health and mana while you are disguised as a plant, in very much the same way as eating will. But you'll be hidden!
